As a respiratory physiotherapist, I have always been interested in understanding rheology in order to characterize the impact of airway clearance techniques on mucus viscoelastic properties. Using the friendly-user rheometer Rheomuco, I have been able to integrate these new outcome measures very easily into my research projects. While other rheometers are very intricate to install and use, Rheomuco can be installed anywhere in addition to an intuitive software that offers a step-by-step support which allowed me to personally train 6 interns and colleagues. This adds up to an excellent technical and scientific support from the Rheonova’s team which allowed me to quickly improve my knowledge and skills into mucus rheology. I have now been using Rheomuco for the last 4 years in the Cliniques universitaires Saint-Luc in Brussels to study the impact of airway clearance techniques involving mechanical air flow oscillations. Data collected with Rheomuco have clearly deepened our understanding of the physiology underlying our treatments, opened up new doors and made new avenues of study possible.

Working on the sputum of the young patients is complicated because of the volumes available. However, not all children have the same quality of mucus and the same degree of inflammation. The Rheonova solution can be a tool to assess the progressive risk of the disease. With a pediatric cohort, a prospective longitudinal study should validate the potential and see the response of patients to the CFTR modulator based on rheological characteristics.
